UNCG Researchers Seeking Participants for Survey on Relationships and Families in Guilford County
Researchers in the Department of Counseling and Educational Development at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro are conducting a study to inform the new Guilford County Healthy Relationships Initiative (HRI), which is a community-wide initiative to infuse the local community with resources and information to support safe, healthy, and satisfying relationships. The HRI is being launched in partnership with the Phillips Foundation and a number of other community partner organizations.
The focus of this study is to learn about the perspectives and resource needs related to relationships and families among residents of Guilford County. To be eligible to participate in this study, prospective participants must be at least 18 years of age and currently reside in Guilford County, NC. Eligible volunteers will be asked to complete an anonymous online questionnaire that will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete. The study will be conducted anonymously, and participants who complete the survey will be eligible to enter a drawing for one of two $100 store gift cards.

SELF Design Studio – Maker in Residence Program – Fall 2016
Are you looking to gain teaching experience and learn amazing new skills? This is your opportunity to work, learn and serve UNCG students in one of the most innovative learning spaces on campus!
In the SELF Design Studio — our STEAM education lab — School of Education students have access to state-of-the-art tools such as 3D printers, a laser engraver, circuitry invention kits, computer graphic applications, virtual and augmented reality tools, robotics, and art and craft supplies.
What will I do as a Maker in Residence?
- Serve as an ambassador and recruiter for the studio at open house events, including workshops for UNCG students and community members, and regional makerfaires
- Introduce and assist SOE students on integrating new technologies such as 3D printers, robots, and art/engineering building projects in curriculum
- Promote and assist in leading Fall workshops for:
- Building your own green screen studio
- 3D printing your own phone case
- Building your own art robot
- Soldering a blinking LED pin
- … as well as opportunities to create your own workshops based on YOUR interests!
- Engage students in pop-up making activities:
- Cardboard and plastic straw construction
- Paper rocket building and launching
- Rain art creation
- Green screen photography and movie-making
How can I become a Maker in Residence?
- We are searching for students who enjoy learning new skills, are open to taking risks, and are excited for the opportunity to share knowledge with others.
- Prior experience with creative teaching is not necessary, but can be a plus! If you have a passion for the arts (fine arts and crafting, music, puppetry, sewing), technology (computer coding, use of tablet apps, video/photography), and/or engineering (building structures with random materials) share it with the SOE community.
- This opportunity is open to any freshman, sophomore, or junior considering a career in education or already admitted to the SOE program.
- Makers in Residence will volunteer for at least 30 hours over the Fall semester.

Spiral Bound Screening
Friday, September 23 at 5 p.m. in SOE 120
ELC will be co-sponsoring the screening of Spiral Bound with the Office of Intercultural Engagement.
Spiral Bound is a documentary about the unlikely union of eight creative high school students from a youth development program and a group of liberal arts college students over the course of one summer. Together, these education activists are seeking social justice not only in the public school system but also in the higher education arena. On this journey, both groups learn the power of the arts in giving a voice to those who need it the most, including themselves. From the inner city streets of Charlotte and the quaint college town of Davidson to the bustling steps of the US Capitol, these young people stand together to change the face of education through their courageous narratives.

Operation Backpack
Thursday September 29, 2016 and Saturday, October 1, 2016, 12:00pm-4:00pm
Dear UNCG Students, Faculty, and Staff,
I am a currently a senior at University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During my drive over the past three years I have noticed the increasing number of people who are homeless walking around the downtown and Lee St. area. Many times I see people carrying their belongings in plastic bags. On most days, over 900 people have no place to sleep in Greensboro. It will be cold weather again and so many of us that are blessed to have a warm place to sleep at night can contribute to assist those in our community that are less fortunate. I think there should be better way for people to carry their precious belongings; therefore, I plan to set up a personal and class project called “Operation Backpack”. Operation BackPack will be used to distribute backpacks to local homeless people with needed items inside. The goal is to collect and fill 100 backpacks with items, which will be used to assist our local homeless in surviving this winter. I am sure most of us have a used extra backpack taking up space in our closet and I am asking you to donate those backpacks to support our homeless in the community. Additionally, we need small or travel size items, male and female items. I ask you to consider donating a gently used backpack or listed items that will fit inside a standard backpack such as:
Blankets
Socks
Wipes for bathing
Razors
Deodorant
Toboggans
Mittens/gloves
Scarfs
Soaps
Water Bottles
Shampoo/conditioner
Combs/hair brushes
Hand warmers
Backpacks
I will have a jar set up for monetary donations in the event time constraints prevent people from going to the store to purchase items. If everyone who reads this letter will donate one item. I am certain we can reach the goal to collect and fill 100 backpacks!
