Dean’s Welcome

Randy PENFIELDIt is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the School of Education at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The history of the School of Education (SOE) extends back nearly 100 years as one of the first teacher preparation programs established in the state of North Carolina.

Throughout our century-long history, we have been dedicated to learning that changes lives. The learning that SOE students experience not only changes their lives through exceptional professional opportunities and growth, but our graduates in turn change the lives of generations of individuals through their roles as teachers, administrators, counselors, and researchers.

Today, the SOE is a center of excellence where research and innovation meet teaching and practice. Our faculty includes highly accomplished educators and researchers who are internationally recognized leaders in their disciplines. The SOE is a hub for innovation in education, being home to a wide range of funded research projects and initiatives that are advancing the fields of education, counseling, assessment, equity, and social justice. These strengths are directly connected to our academic programs, creating an unparalleled learning environment where our students actively learn from the cutting-edge expertise of our faculty and engage in the many innovative projects and initiatives housed in the SOE.

Students of the SOE receive extraordinary training that combines a rigorous curriculum of courses with rich practical learning experiences offered outside of the classroom. From extensive internship and student teaching opportunities for teacher education students, to outstanding clinical experiences available to our counseling students in the Vacc Counseling and Consulting Clinic, to the diverse hands-on experiences offered to our students specializing in assessment and evaluation through our Office of Assessment, Evaluation, and Research Services, practical experience is a hallmark of our programs. We are devoted to developing students who graduate from the SOE with solid foundational knowledge, real world experience, and the intellectual skills necessary to be highly effective in their careers.

We appreciate your interest and invite you to explore the many opportunities available in the SOE. Should you have any questions, we hope you will contact us to learn more.
