FACULTY, STUDENT AND ALUMNI ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Two Middle Grades Teacher Education seniors, Joshua Mata and Tabitha Woods, have been inducted into UNCG’s Golden Chain Honor Society which honors students who have made significant and meaningful contributions to the University community in the areas of leadership, scholarship, service, tolerance, judgment, magnanimity, and character.
Several current students and faculty as well as alumni of HED were recently recognized at the annual conference of the ACPA-College Student Educators International.
Second-year Master’s students Amber Hamilton and Renard John-Finn won 3rd place in the Coalition for Graduate Students & New Professionals Graduate Student Case Study Competition; Amber Hamilton also received the Roberta Christy Essay Award from the Commission for Professional Preparation.
HED Alumna Tyshea Lewis (’16), currently Director of the UNCG Guarantee Program, received the Outstanding New Professional Award from the Coalition for Graduate Students & New Professionals.
Adjunct professor Dr. Alan Mueller, current President of the North Carolina College Personnel Association (NCCPA) was recognized as Outstanding State Chapter Leader as well as accepted the award for Outstanding State Chapter for NCCPA.
Brad Johnson was also formally recognized as a member of the 2017 Diamond Honoree class by the ACPA Foundation.
CED alumni (n = 21), faculty (n = 2), and students (n = 5) presented a total of 35 programs at the recent conference of the American Counseling Association, held in San Francisco.
During the conference, CED alumni received the following awards:
Casey Barrio Minton – Arthur A. Hitchcock Distinguished Professional Service Award
Laura Shannonhouse – Best Practices Research Award
Joshua Watson – David K. Brooks, Jr. Distinguished Mentor Award
In addition, Donna Gibson and W. Bryce Hagedorn were named ACA Fellows.
Earlier we announced both the election of CED alum Dr. Simone Lambert as President-elect of the American Counseling Association, and CED faculty member Dr. Connie Jones as President-elect of the International Association of Addictions and Offender Counselors.
Here are some additional results:
Dr. Catharina Chang (alum) was named President-elect of the Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling.
Dr. Evette Horton (alum) was named President-elect of the Association for Child and Adolescent Counseling.
Dr. Mark Scholl (alum) was named Governing Council Representative for the Association for Humanistic Counseling.

Dr. Brian McGowan (TEHE) was invited to serve as Faculty-in-Residence for the Emerging Scholars Workshop for Division J (Postsecondary Education) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). Brian will collaborate with other assistant professors from across the country to serve as mentors to 42 doctoral students attending the workshop.
