Phillips Foundation Announces Upcoming Launch of the Guilford County Healthy Relationships Initiative

Phillips Foundation today announced its latest original program, the Guilford County Healthy Relationships Initiative (HRI). The HRI is a first-of- its-kind, community-wide effort developed by the Foundation in partnership with the UNCG Department of Counseling and Educational Development to improve relational health across Guilford County. The initiative will officially launch in February 2017 at the conclusion of its research and development phase.

Working Papers in Education

We are excited to announce the publication of Volume 2 of the UNCG Working Papers in Education https://libjournal.uncg.edu/index.php/wpe. Thank you to the editors Saed Qunbar (ERM), Patrick Hales (TEHE), Carrie Hart (ELC), and to J.B. Weir (ERM) and Cherese Childers-Mckee (ELC) for their dedication. This issue features three papers by Robyn Thomas Pitts and Oksana Naumenko; Lalenja Harrington, Kimberly D. Miller, Denise Sumiel; and Kelly M. O’Donnell. Thank you to the authors for the contributions to the journal!
The focus of the journal has shifted to for our next issue be inclusive of all graduate programs in the School of Education. Please see the attached flyers with details of the Call for Papers (January 20, 2017 deadline) and upcoming workshops. The first workshop on December 1, 2016 from 1-3pm in SOEB 301 provides information about getting involved in the journal from editorial roles to authorship.

NVivo to be Removed from UNCG Network – July 31, 2017

SOE Instructional Technology: Canvas Arc

UNCG ITS has paid for a trial of Canvas Arc for Spring 2017, an interactive video management system integrated with Canvas.

“Arc is a communication tool that allows instructors and students to actively collaborate through video through all elements of Canvas with a Rich Content Editor (Pages, Discussions, Assignments, etc).”

Turnitin Integration with Canvas

Turnitin Originality Detector has changed the way it integrates in Canvas.  It now works through an LTI integration with Assignments, which significantly changes the way it works and looks in Canvas versus how it worked in past semesters.

FACULTY/STUDENT/ALUMNI ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 

Kudos! to Paula Swindle, 3rd year doctoral student in CED, who was selected for second place (and a $500 award)! in the UNCG Graduate School’s Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT) on November 17, 2016.  Paula talked about her dissertation study topic, “Religious Abuse: A Twisting of the Sacred.”
In the 3MT competition, graduate students convey the essence and importance of their master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation research in an engaging way to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes and with one Power Point slide.

David F. Ayers (ELC) has been appointed to the Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice Editorial Board. JSARP is the flagship journal of the NASPA, Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATES

We would like to thank Jennifer Smith Hooks ’76 and Jacob T. Hooks for committing  $1,200,000 to UNCG.

The Hooks will be giving us a gift of $200,000 before year-end to endow the Jennifer Smith Hooks and Jacob T. Hooks Distinguished Professorship in STEM Education. Their wish is to use $20,000 each year out of the $200,000 to award a professorship during their lifetime.
The other $1,000,000 will be a testamentary gift – $667,000 will be used for the Professorship; $133,000 will be added to the Carrie Perkins Davis/Katherine Davis Smith Scholarship in Education and the other $200,000 will be used to establish the Jennifer Smith Hooks and Jacob T. Hooks Graduate Scholarship in STEM Education.

 

We would like to thank Judy Blackwelder Talbert ’61 and John B. Talbert for their $50,000 pledge payment to the Judy Blackwelder Talbert & Daniel Scott Talbert Teacher Education Scholarship.

This fund was established in 1998 and has provided 49 awards.
