Spartan Readers: University Reading Clinic

Our goal is to help struggling readers in first through eighth grades become confident, active readers. Spartan Readers meets weekly October through April. The sessions are planned and taught by UNCG students with the support of a faculty member and graduate students. Since we only meet once a week, we ask that a family member attend most sessions. We encourage family members to participate in the sessions, share information with the child’s other teachers, and support the reader with similar strategies at home.

Sessions are on Monday evenings. The clinic times vary by semester but are usually between 5:30-7:30pm. Weekly sessions include supported reading of developmentally appropriate text, interactive word study, and targeted comprehension or fluency instruction. At the end of each semester, the UNCG student will write a report that describes your child’s progress as well as suggestions for future instruction.

Spartan Readers is a fee-based clinic. The typical tuition is between $75-100 a semester. The fee is based on the number of sessions we are able to offer. A limited number of scholarships are available.

If you are interested in having your child participate in the clinic, please e-mail Dr. Erika Gray at esgray2@uncg.edu.
