SELF Design Studio to Exhibit at Charlotte Mini Maker Faire

Call for Stuffed Animals in the SELF Design Studio
The SELF Design Studio staff is asking for donations of new or gently used stuffed animals to make Frankenplushes with SOE students. Donations will be accepted through October 15.
Make Nominations for 2015-16 Alumni Teaching Excellence and Board of Governors Awards
To recognize outstanding teaching and demonstrate our commitment to teaching excellence, the university presents three awards to UNCG faculty members every year; the UNC system also presents an award for teaching excellence to a UNCG faculty member each year.
Nominations must be submitted by October 6, 2015. Complete submission dossiers must be submitted by November 9, 2015. Eligible faculty members who receive 2014-2015 teaching awards from their College or School will be automatically nominated. The nomination form is available at http://utlc.uncg.edu/teaching/teaching-excellence-awards.

Dancers Connect
Do you know a student that simply loves to dance but is not able to afford dance classes at a local studio or community center?
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Dancers Connect program is a FREE community dance program for children ages 7-18 who love to dance. Dancers Connect classes meet on Saturdays from 12:00-2:00 for 8 weeks beginningSeptember 25, 2015.
In Dancers Connect classes students learn dance technique and artistic expression as well as develop collaboration and creative problem solving skills. Classes are led by professional dance educators. Our 8 – week session culminates in a Dancers Connect performance for parents and friends on December 6th 2015.

Call for Faculty Research Award Nominations
As in the past we will have two faculty research awards, the Distinguished Research Scholar (only assistant professors are eligible) and Distinguished Senior Research Scholar (only associate and full professors are eligible). This year’s award ceremony will be Friday, April 22 from 9-12. As part of this ceremony, we will hear from last year’s recipients: Wayne Journell, Laura Gonzales and Dale Schunk. Deadline for nominations is Monday, November 30th.

Dr. Ayesha Boyce to Present Free Webinar on the Values-Engaged, Educative (VEE) Evaluation Approach

Dr. Ayesha Boyce will be presenting a free webinar (9/24/2015, 3 – 4:30pm) introducing the Values-Engaged, Educative (VEE) evaluation approach. The webinar will be hosted by the RMC Research Corporation. They are funded by the National Science Foundation to support the needs of the evaluation community in the NSF Math and Science Partnership (MSP) program. The webinar is free and open to the public.

The Values-Engaged, Educative (VEE) evaluation approach, developed with National Science Foundation (NSF)-EHR support, defines high quality STEM educational programming as that which effectively incorporates cutting-edge scientific content, strong pedagogy, and sensitivity to diversity and equity issues. Extensive field tests in STEM education program contexts, commitments aligned with the NSF, the desire to use appropriate methodologies, and attention to the social-relational dimensions of evaluation, make VEE a good fit for evaluations of Math and Science Partnership programs. In this webinar, we will introduce the VEE approach and point viewers to further resources and materials about this approach. Drawing from practical examples of evaluations of MSP projects and other NSF programs, we will discuss strategies for evaluating STEM program implementation, effectiveness, impact, and sustainability with this approach.

Rebecca Carver Institute on Experiential Education Workshop
Saturday, October 3
On Saturday, October 3, The Rebecca Carver Institute on Experiential Education will host an all-day workshop entitled, “Addressing the Achievement Gap through Experiential Education” at UNCG’s Campus Recreation Piney Lake Facility. Led by Dr. William Sedlacek, expert in metacognitive skills, participants will explore a unique and interactive framework that can be applied to better equip 21st-century students with the skills that will make them more effective, engaged, and critical learners. This workshop is open to UNCG faculty, staff, and graduate students, as well as K-12 educators from the greater Greensboro community.

Instructional Technology Tools Course Available
SOE Instructional Technology has created an Instructional Technology Tools Course in Canvas. This resource is designed for instructors who are interested in implementing more technology in their classroom and pedagogy. This course is asynchronous, available to anyone with a UNCG email address, provides no certification or degree credit, and is voluntary.

FACULTY ACCOMPLISHMENTS
State Superintendent Dr. June Atkinson has named Dr. L. DiAnne Borders (CED) to the NC School Counseling Leadership Team charged with “refining goals and objectives for developing pre-service and in-service strategies to support school administrators and school counselors with fostering K-12 college-going cultures and effective utilization of school counselors.” The goals are based in the White House’s College Opportunity Agenda and the First Lady’s Reach Higher Initiative, as well as the followup meeting at the White House on Strengthening School Counseling, a “listening and learning” session convened by White House staff with experts from higher education, nonprofit, and professional organizations, including challenges and opportunities for school counselors to support students’ college aspirations. Dr. Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy, CED PhD alum, was a featured speaker/expert at that meeting, and several NC representatives attended by invitation. Over 2015-2016, the NC School Counseling Leadership Team will work “to strengthen schools in graduating students who are truly college and career ready.”
