SOE Alumni Awards – Nominations due Wednesday, February 25

Nominations are now open for this year’s SOE Alumni Awards. If you have any nominations for the four awards, please fill outthis form no later than February 25. As a reminder the awards are: Early Career Award, Distinguished Career Award, Outstanding Achievement Award, and Distinguished Service Award. Descriptions of each award may be found on the form. Please include the nominee’s name and your detailed criteria for the nomination.

 

Free Concert – Aorigele featurting the “Horsehead Fiddle” – Wednesday, February 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Chinese musician, Aorigele, from Tongliao, Inner Mongolia, China, will host a FREE concert featuring the “Horsehead Fiddle” (Ma Tou Qin), a Mongolian string instrument at the UNCG Music Building Recital Hall. The concert is at 7:30pm on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Fall 2015 Advising and Registration Appointments – Through March 31

The office has begun Fall 2015 advising and registration appointments.  This peak advising period will run now through March 31.  Walk-in appointments will be placed on hold during this time, and become available again on April 1.

 

SOE Staff Award – Nominations due Monday, March 2

The recipient of the UNCG School of Education (SOE) Staff Excellence Award will exemplify the core values and behaviors of the SOE staff assembly. The recipient will be announced on Reading Day Spring 2015. The recipient will receive $500.

You can nominate more than one person. You need to fill out one form for each person you want to nominate. You can find the form here.

Your nominations must be submitted by March 2, 2015. We greatly appreciate your nominations.

The 2015 UNCG SOE Staff Excellence Award Committee includes Maggie Becker, Karen De Naples, and Cheryl Greenberg. The committee members are not eligible to be nominated this year.

Yopp Distinguished Speaker Series, Dr. Elham Kazemi – Monday, March 23

The TEHE Mathematics Education Faculty are delighted to welcome Dr. Elham Kazemi to UNCG on Monday, March 23, 2015.  She will give two talks as part of the Yopp Distinguished Speaker Series in Mathematics Education — a research talk (11 am – 12:30 pm) and a connecting-research-and-practice talk (5 – 6:30 pm).  The afternoon talk is intended for the broader community so please invite interested educators from the community.  Details about the talks are included in the flyer.

SOE Scholarships – Applications due Wednesday, April 1

Birth-Kindergarten Initial Licensure Program Grant Funding Opportunity– Applications due Wednesday, April 1

Funding is available through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs for qualified students in the BK:ILP who wish to gain specialized experience in early intervention and early childhood special education. Ten spaces are available for the first cohort, beginning Fall 2015.

The grant will provide full tuition support and a stipend to assist in covering program expenses for selected students. With this support, students will:

  • Complete the BK:ILP course of study
  • Complete an additional one credit hour Seminar in Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education
  • Participate in expanded field experiences in early intervention and early childhood special education
  • Participate in professional and peer mentoring and induction activities

COMMENCEMENT INFORMATION

Commencement Guide Available Online

The SOE’s 2015 Commencement information is available online here. Information about summer graduates, registration, and guests and much more has been posted. 

 

Faculty and Student SOE Commencement Registration Now Open

All faculty who plan to participate in the School of Education Commencement should fill out the Faculty RSVP Commencement Form. Please RSVP your participation interest no later than Thursday, April 23.

Students graduating in May or August interested in participating in the Ceremony will need to complete the SOE Commencement Student Registration Form by Friday, April 3 for inclusion in the printed program. PLEASE NOTE: Doctoral students need to have defended by Friday, April 3 in order to have their names listed in the May Commencement program. If Doctoral students defend before SOE Commencement, but after April 3, they are still allowed to walk in the SOE Commencement ceremony, however their names will not be listed in the Commencement program.

 

Student Speakers for SOE Commencement

We are currently seeking nominations for student speakers for the 2015 SOE Commencement ceremony. Please submit names of nominated student speakers to Laura Caroline Spell at lcspell@uncg.edu. Students should be prepared to submit proposed remarks no later than March 27 to lcspell@uncg.edu. Remarks should be no longer than 600 words in length.

RESEARCH

SOE Research Awards Ceremony – Friday, April 10

The Research Awards Ceremony this spring will be held on April 10, from 9-12 p.m. in Room 224 SOEB.  The format will be similar to that of last year’s ceremony. We will have a video of faculty and graduate students talking about their research, three-minute thesis talks from the top graduate researcher from each department, as well as short presentations by last year’s faculty research award recipients, Dr. Holt Wilson and Dr. DiAnne Borders.  The ceremony will conclude with Dr. Wilson and Dr. Borders will handing out the research awards for this year’s recipients.

 

Nominations open for 2015 Undergraduate Research Mentor Award – Deadline Friday, March 6

The Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Office (URSCO) requests nominations of outstanding UNCG faculty mentors for the Thomas Undergraduate Research Mentor Award. The faculty member must have mentored at least two UNCG undergraduate students in research or creative inquiry. The 2015 Thomas Undergraduate Research Mentor Award will be presented during the 9th Annual Carolyn and Norwood Thomas Undergraduate Research and Creativity Expo, which will be held on April 7.  This honor will include a plaque and $1,000 to support activities related to research or creative inquiry as it involves undergraduates during the following academic year. SOE Technical Support and Website Update Procedures

SOE TECHNICAL SUPPORT

As of July 1, Bob Englert and Doug Taylor, Technical Support Analysts from the Bryan School, are assisting SOE with technical support requests.

Faculty and staff should email all technical support requests to SOE-TECH-L@uncg.edu and 6-TECH will be notified so an incident ticket can be created and Bob, Doug, and Sandra will be notified.

Note: The above email address should only be used to report the initial technical requests to 6-Tech and not as a direct communication method to Bob and Doug. If you have any questions, please contact Sandra Bates-Hart (smbatesh@uncg.eduor 334-3402).

 

PROCEDURE FOR PROCESSING WEB UPDATES

Note: This does not include grant funded projects.

  1. All web updates and additions must be approved by your department chair or manager. Once approved, complete and submit the form below.
  2. Faculty/staff needing content changes on the website will need to complete a request using the following form: SOE Web Update Request Form
  3. Accompanying attachments and image files should be sent to soeweb@uncg.edu by the requestor.
  4. Web updates will be made by a SOE Website Content Contributoror DCL Web Specialist. Faculty/staff will receive an email confirmation when their request has been completed.

FACULTY/STAFF/STUDENT/ALUMNI ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The recipients of the 2015 Gladys Strawn Bullard Award have been selected.  Dr. Catherine Matthews (TEHE) was the faculty award recipient.

RECENT FACULTY PRESENTATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS

Rebecca Morris (LIS) recently presented at two conferences. On January 28, she presented the paper, “What Youth Services LIS Students ‘Know for Sure'” at the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) Annual Conference in Chicago. The paper was part of the Youth Services SIG Panel, Transforming Youth Services in Library and Information Science: A Participatory Panel of Best Practices for Social Justice Action and Praxis.

She also presented a breakout session at the Journal of Language and Literacy Education (JoLLE) Winter Conference at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA on February 7. Part of the conference’s “Create Strand,” the session was entitled, “Draw My Life: Using Stick Figure Storytelling to Foster Participators and Digital Literacies.”

 

 

WHAT’S NEW

OSS Staff Farewell and Welcome

Effective March 1st, Jennifer Stephens begins her new position as Coordinator of Residential College Development in the University Teaching & Learning Commons.  Jennifer will have responsibility for faculty and curriculum development in the Residential Colleges and directing the Teacher Education Fellows Program.  We wish Jennifer the best in her new position at UNCG.

Brian Strickland has accepted the vacant position of Assistant Director of OSS.  Brian has spent the last several months at Forsyth Technical Community College where he was responsible for creation and staff training of several initiatives for the newly created office.  We are excited to have him return to the School of Ed.
