2014-15 Teaching Assistant Excellence Award – Monday, February 9
It is time to nominate candidates for SOE’s 2014-2015 Teaching Assistant Excellence Award! Nominations are due via email to either Anthony Chow (aschow@uncg.edu) or Sam Miller (sdmille2@uncg.edu) no later than Monday, February 9. Please take a few moments to nominate a TA who has demonstrated excellence in teaching (Spring, Summer, and Fall 2014).
Triad Intercollegiate Conference – Saturday, February 21 (Registration open through Friday, February 13)
The Triad Intercollegiate Conference is sponsored by Elon, NC A&T, and UNCG and will take place from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm on Saturday, February 21, 2015 on the campus of Elon University. This one-day conference will allow future educators to receive information on various topics such as communication in education, intercultural competency, working with colleagues, and social media. All of these topics will serve to help future educators become knowledgeable of the ins and outs of the classroom.
The conference fee is $15.00, payable in cash or check to Dr. Jennifer Stephens in 124 School of Education Building. You may contact her at jetomon@uncg.edu. The registration fee will provide you with lunch, two educational workshops, and a keynote session. A portion of the registration fees will be donated to The Village Projects at Elon and UNCG.

Applications open for 2015 Student Excellence Award – Deadline Friday, February 13
Lloyd International Honors College is now inviting nominations for the 2015 Student Excellence Award. These awards are given to seniors whose academic careers are outstanding both inside and outside the classroom. Each academic department and interdisciplinary program may nominate up to two students for the award. Nomination materials have been delivered to faculty and can be found at http://honorscollege.uncg.edu/faculty/student-awards.htm
The deadline for receiving nominations is Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, in 205 Foust Building. If you have any questions, call Lloyd International Honors College at 334-5538.
Teacher Supply Warehouse Drive – Through Wednesday, February 18
UNCG Staff Senate and three student groups, the Teacher Education Student Association (TESA), the UNCG Teaching Fellows and Kappa Delta Pi, are combining efforts to help restock the Teacher Supply Warehouse operated by the Guilford Education Alliance. The Teacher Supply Warehouse allows Guilford County teachers to “shop” for much needed classroom supplies. All items in the warehouse are donated by the community.
Please consider donating the following items for the drive running from January 19th through February 18th:

- Scissors
- Tissue
- Post-it notes
- Wet wipes
- Colored ink pens
- Hand sanitizer
- Colored pencils
- Calculators

Triad Teacher Researcher Conference – Proposals due Friday, February 20
Proposals for the Triad Teacher Researcher Conference at UNCG on April 29 are due February 20 at midnight. This conference is for ALL educators at ALL levels. SOE Alumni Awards – Nominations due Wednesday, February 25
Nominations are now open for this year’s SOE Alumni Awards. If you have any nominations for the four awards, please fill out this form no later than February 25. As a reminder the awards are: Early Career Award, Distinguished Career Award, Outstanding Achievement Award, and Distinguished Service Award. Descriptions of each award may be found on the form. Please include the nominee’s name and your detailed criteria for the nomination.

Birth-Kindergarten Initial Licensure Program Grant Funding Opportunity– Applications due Wednesday, April 1
Funding is available through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs for qualified students in the BK:ILP who wish to gain specialized experience in early intervention and early childhood special education. Ten spaces are available for the first cohort, beginning Fall 2015.
The grant will provide full tuition support and a stipend to assist in covering program expenses for selected students. With this support, students will:
- Complete the BK:ILP course of study
- Complete an additional one credit hour Seminar in Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education
- Participate in expanded field experiences in early intervention and early childhood special education
- Participate in professional and peer mentoring and induction activities

2015 Chinese New Year Acrobatic Performance – Tuesday, February 24
The Greensboro Chinese Association is sponsoring an Acrobatic performance at NC A&T State University Harrison Auditorium from 7-9pm on February 24, 2015 to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Tickets can be purchased from 2-6pm on Feb. 1, 8, & 22 in the School of Education building at UNCG (ticket is $10 per person).

SOE Research Awards Ceremony – Friday, April 10
The Research Awards Ceremony this spring will be held on April 10, from 9-12 p.m. in Room 224 SOEB. The format will be similar to that of last year’s ceremony. We will have a video of faculty and graduate students talking about their research, three-minute thesis talks from the top graduate researcher from each department, as well as short presentations by last year’s faculty research award recipients, Dr. Holt Wilson and Dr. DiAnne Borders. The ceremony will conclude with Dr. Wilson and Dr. Borders will handing out the research awards for this year’s recipients.
Nominations open for 2015 Undergraduate Research Mentor Award – Deadline Friday, March 6
The Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Office (URSCO) requests nominations of outstanding UNCG faculty mentors for the Thomas Undergraduate Research Mentor Award. The faculty member must have mentored at least two UNCG undergraduate students in research or creative inquiry. The 2015 Thomas Undergraduate Research Mentor Award will be presented during the 9th Annual Carolyn and Norwood Thomas Undergraduate Research and Creativity Expo, which will be held on April 7. This honor will include a plaque and $1,000 to support activities related to research or creative inquiry as it involves undergraduates during the following academic year. As of July 1, Bob Englert and Doug Taylor, Technical Support Analysts from the Bryan School, are assisting SOE with technical support requests.
Faculty and staff should email all technical support requests to SOE-TECH-L@uncg.edu and 6-TECH will be notified so an incident ticket can be created and Bob, Doug, and Sandra will be notified.

FACULTY/STAFF/STUDENT/ALUMNI ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The University of North Carolina Greensboro’s School of Education’s Master of Library and Information Studies Degree ranked among the best in the article titled “The 20 Best Online Master of Library and Information Science Degree Programs” by TheBestSchools.org.
TheBestSchools.org selected University of North Carolina Greensboro’s program based on several weighted factors, including academic excellence, course offerings, faculty strengths, and reputation, including reputation for online degree programs.
Victoria Allen, a 2014 graduate of the secondary social studies program, was recently named as the Grimsley High School Rookie Teacher of the Year. Victoria will now compete for the overall Rookie Teacher of the Year in Guilford County.
Traci Bellas, doctoral candidate from the Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education, received the travel stipend award from the Association of Teacher Educators-Multicultural Education SIG for the 2015 annual conference
The 2014-15 recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award and $1,000 is Dr. L. DiAnne Borders from the Department of Counseling & Educational Development. Her work will be celebrated at the Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards in April. Please join The Graduate School in congratulating Dr. Borders.
This award was inaugurated only a few years ago and there is an impressive pool of dedicated and long-serving faculty members awaiting recognition. The process of reviewing the nominations inspires great pride in UNCG and its faculty.
Colleen Mills, senior sociology major and secondary social studies education student is the recipient of a $1,000 student teacher scholarship from the North Carolina Council for the Social Studies. Colleen will accept the award at the NCCSS meeting on February 12th in Greensboro.
Dr. Dale Schunk (TEHE) received the Barry J. Zimmerman Award for Outstanding Contributions to the fields of studying and self-regulated learning research from the American Educational Research Association. He will be officially recognized at the Studying and Self-Regulated Learning SIG business meeting at AERA.
RECENT FACULTY PRESENTATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS
A study by David F. Ayers titled, “Credentialing structures, pedagogies, practices, and curriculum goals: Trajectories of change in community college missions statements,” was accepted for publication in Community College Review.
In November, Heidi Carlone (TEHE) served as a dissertation opponent at Stockholm University for a dissertation by Per Anderhag entitled, “Taste for science: How can teaching make a difference for students’ interest in science?” While in Sweden, she also gave an invited lecture for faculty and students at Stockholm University entitled, “Being ‘smart’ and being ‘me’ in a herpetology summer enrichment program and in school science.” At Malmö University, she gave an invited lecture entitled, “The cultural production of smartness in science learning settings.”
