Welcome

We are pleased to welcome several new staff and faculty to UNCG this spring.
Laura Caroline Spell joins the SOE as the Communications and Events Specialist. She comes to us from Campbell University where she worked as the Assistant Director of Athletics Media Services.
Gabrielle Leonard is serving as the new Executive Assistant to the Dean. Gabrielle moved back to Greensboro after living and working in Atlanta at the Art Institute.
Many of you may have already met Margaret (Maggie) Becker. She joined the SOE in November and serves as the Administrative Support Associate working on special projects and supporting the Associate and Assistant Deans.
Carrie Wachter-Morris joined the CED faculty as Associate Professor. She comes to UNCG from Purdue University and is also a graduate of the UNCG counseling program.
Goodbye
(Message from Meredith Carlone)
We regret to share that Sonia Martin, Administrative Support Associate in SES, will be leaving us. Sonia will be moving across campus to the College for a position in the Communications Department.
Touger Vang, Administrative Support Associate in LIS, will also be leaving the SOE. Touger is moving to sunny California to accept a job in his field of library science.
We thank both Sonia and Touger for their dedication and service to the SOE and wish them well on the next endeavors.

As we begin the semester we would like to remind faculty and staff to close and lock your doors as you leave your office – even if it’s just to go down the hall. There have been a number of thefts in the recent past so please be aware and responsible for your office space.

Forum – Education in China and Korea – Friday, January 30
Join us from 8-11am on January 30 at 401 School of Education building (1300 Spring Garden Street) if you could like to participate in a discussion regarding education in China and Korea. Eight teacher candidates from Shanghai Normal University in China and 6 special education teacher candidates from Inje University in Korea will host a forum to discuss education in China and special education in Korea. UNCG Chancellor Search Listening Forums – Throughout January
Below is the list of listening forums sponsored by the UNCG Chancellor Search Committee. These forums are focused on gathering feedback from UNCG constituents on the qualities and traits wanted in the next chancellor. The themes and comments gathered during the forums will assist in completing the leadership statement. As indicated, the forums are structured for specific constituent groups, but are not exclusive to these groups; all forums are open to the public.

Applications open for 2015 Student Excellence Award – Deadline Friday, February 13
Lloyd International Honors College is now inviting nominations for the 2015 Student Excellence Award. These awards are given to seniors whose academic careers are outstanding both inside and outside the classroom. Each academic department and interdisciplinary program may nominate up to two students for the award. Nomination materials have been delivered to faculty and can be found at http://honorscollege.uncg.edu/faculty/student-awards.htm
The deadline for receiving nominations is Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, in 205 Foust Building. If you have any questions, call Lloyd International Honors College at 334-5538.
Teacher Supply Warehouse Drive – Through Wednesday, February 18
UNCG Staff Senate and three student groups, the Teacher Education Student Association (TESA), the UNCG Teaching Fellows and Kappa Delta Pi, are combining efforts to help restock the Teacher Supply Warehouse operated by the Guilford Education Alliance. The Teacher Supply Warehouse allows Guilford County teachers to “shop” for much needed classroom supplies. All items in the warehouse are donated by the community.
Please consider donating the following items for the drive running from January 19th through February 18th:
- Copy paper
- Scissors
- Tissue
- Post-it notes
- Wet wipes
- Colored ink pens
- Hand sanitizer
- Colored pencils
- Calculators
- Notebook paper
- Paint (large size acrylic)

Triad Teacher Researcher Conference – Proposals due Friday, February 20
Proposals for the Triad Teacher Researcher Conference at UNCG on April 29 are due February 20 at midnight. This conference is for ALL educators at ALL levels. Nominations open for 2015 Undergraduate Research Mentor Award – Deadline Friday, March 6
The Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Office (URSCO) requests nominations of outstanding UNCG faculty mentors for the Thomas Undergraduate Research Mentor Award. The faculty member must have mentored at least two UNCG undergraduate students in research or creative inquiry. The 2015 Thomas Undergraduate Research Mentor Award will be presented during the 9th Annual Carolyn and Norwood Thomas Undergraduate Research and Creativity Expo, which will be held on April 7. This honor will include a plaque and $1,000 to support activities related to research or creative inquiry as it involves undergraduates during the following academic year. SOE Technical Support and Website Update Procedures
SOE TECHNICAL SUPPORT
As of July 1, Bob Englert and Doug Taylor, Technical Support Analysts from the Bryan School, are assisting SOE with technical support requests.
Faculty and staff should email all technical support requests to SOE-TECH-L@uncg.edu and 6-TECH will be notified so an incident ticket can be created and Bob, Doug, and Sandra will be notified.
Note: The above email address should only be used to report the initial technical requests to 6-Tech and not as a direct communication method to Bob and Doug. If you have any questions, please contact Sandra Bates-Hart (smbatesh@uncg.edu or 334-3402).

Note: This does not include grant funded projects.
- All web updates and additions must be approved by your department chair or manager. Once approved, complete and submit the form below.
- Faculty/staff needing content changes on the website will need to complete a request using the following form: SOE Web Update Request Form
- Accompanying attachments and image files should be sent to soeweb@uncg.edu by the requestor.
- Web updates will be made by a SOE Website Content Contributoror DCL Web Specialist. Faculty/staff will receive an email confirmation when their request has been completed.

FACULTY/STAFF/STUDENT/ALUMNI ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The 2014-15 recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award and $1,000 is Dr. L. DiAnne Borders from the Department of Counseling & Educational Development. Her work will be celebrated at the Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards in April. Please join The Graduate School in congratulating Dr. Borders.
This award was inaugurated only a few years ago and there is an impressive pool of dedicated and long-serving faculty members awaiting recognition. The process of reviewing the nominations inspires great pride in UNCG and its faculty.
Dr. Dale Schunk (TEHE) received the Barry J. Zimmerman Award for Outstanding Contributions to the fields of studying and self-regulated learning research from the American Educational Research Association. He will be officially recognized at the Studying and Self-Regulated Learning SIG business meeting at AERA.
RECENT FACULTY PRESENTATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS
In November, Heidi Carlone (TEHE) served as a dissertation opponent at Stockholm University for a dissertation by Per Anderhag entitled, “Taste for science: How can teaching make a difference for students’ interest in science?” While in Sweden, she also gave an invited lecture for faculty and students at Stockholm University entitled, “Being ‘smart’ and being ‘me’ in a herpetology summer enrichment program and in school science.” At Malmö University, she gave an invited lecture entitled, “The cultural production of smartness in science learning settings.”
