The University of North Carolina, Greensboro’s department of Library and Information Studies welcomes April Dawkins to its faculty, effective August 2017. April is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Library & Information Science at the University of South Carolina, which she expects to finish in May 2017. Her doctoral dissertation examines the factors that influence decisions around selection in school libraries and the role of self-censorship. April received her Master of Library Science from NC Central University, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Meredith College. She holds National Board Certification for Early Childhood to Young Adulthood Library Media, and NC teaching licenses in school library media education (K-12), secondary social studies (9-12), and academically/intellectually gifted (K-12). At the University of South Carolina School of Library & Information Science, April served as a Graduate Research Assistant for Dr. Karen Gavigan. She also served as a News Intern in the Office for Intellectual Freedom at the American Library Association. April’s research agenda is centered around intellectual freedom and school libraries. This encompasses the equity of access to materials and technology for students, censorship in school libraries, privacy rights of students, and the role of policy and advocacy in the future of school libraries.
