MLIS with School Library Licensure [Hybrid]

The master of library science degree (MLIS/MLS) is an entry-level requirement for all North Carolina public school librarians. Public school librarians in North Carolina must have a master’s degree in library and information studies. Additionally, school librarians are licensed as teachers. As is true for the MLIS degree on the whole, any undergraduate preparation is appropriate.

The MLIS degree with school library licensure allows individuals to apply for licensure to work in public schools but also in any area of the library and information profession where a MLIS degree is required. Prospective students interested in the MLIS degree with school library licensure should apply through the UNCG Graduate School for the MLIS-MLic 076 concentration. A GRE or MAT score is not required if the prospective student has an undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or higher or has an advanced degree (masters or doctorate) in another area.

Anyone successfully completing the LIS program requirements for the MLIS program with school library licensure may apply for NC licensure as a school librarian. Those desiring to be licensed as school librarians in other states must contact the specific state licensing agency. NC has teaching reciprocity with many other states.

UNCG’s school library faculty work closely with students to provide numerous opportunities for authentic experiences in school library settings. Students are supported through instruction and individualized feedback. They have the opportunity to participate in practicums, lesson development, collection analysis, facility design, and media production. Regardless of whether or not a student has a background in education, the MLIS program can help students fulfill the requirements for school library licensure while earning the MLIS degree.
