Admissions Questions
I’m interested in coming to UNC Greensboro to major in education. Who should I contact?

Are there tours for students who are interested in becoming education majors?
We have weekly information sessions every Friday at noon for students interested in becoming UNC Greensboro education majors. Attendees take part in a tour of the Teaching Resources Center and the Self Design Studio. A Q&A is held at the end of the session with our recruitment coordinator Ashley Hughes. I was admitted to UNCG, and I’m listed as a pre-major. What does that mean?
As a new UNC Greensboro student, you have to meet specific requirements in order to be admitted to your program of study. Contact an advisor for your major to discuss specific requirements to move from pre-major to major status and deadlines for meeting these requirements.

Our office is located on the first floor of the School of Education Building
What are your office hours?
Our office is open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.
How can I set up an appointment?
Appointments with staff can be set up through email, phone, or starfish. You can access staff contact information here. Walk-in hours are on Tuesdays 1pm-4pm and Thursdays 9am-12pm.
Advising for Undergraduate Academic Programs
What undergraduate degree programs are advised by the Office of Student Services and Advising?
Currently, the office advises undergraduate students in the following majors: Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, Special Education, the Dual Elementary Education/Special Education program. The office also advised undergraduate students in Secondary Education programs in Social Studies Education, Math Education, Science Education, and English Education.
How long does it take to complete these programs?
For new first year students, it typically takes 4 years to complete these programs. For transfer students, it can take 2.5 to 3 years to complete these programs.

Do any of the undergraduate degree majors have online classes?
Only a few of the courses offered within each major are online. Most of the courses found in each major are only offered on campus during the morning and afternoon and evening hours.
How do I change my major?

Advising for Alternative Licensure Programs
What are Alternative Licensure Programs?
These programs provide initial teacher certification options to those who have already earned a 4-year degree. These programs include NC Teach, Licensure-Only, and the PAIL program. Click the links for each program to learn more about the licensure areas offered.
When and how can I apply to these programs?
If you are interested in NC Teach or Licensure Only Programs, you can apply for admission three times a year. The deadlines for admission are July 1st (for fall semester), October 1st (for spring semester), and April 1st (for summer semester).
PAIL only admits students in the summer, and the deadline for admission is April 1st.

How long will it take to complete these programs?
For NC Teach, it might take as little as 3 semesters to complete if you take 6 credit hours each semester. It may take longer depending on how many courses you can take each semester.
For Licensure-Only, the length of the program will depend on the degree you have and when you are available to take courses.
For PAIL, students take 2 classes in the summer, 2 in the fall, 2 in the spring, and then in the final fall semester complete their practicum/student teaching
When are courses offered, and do you offer online courses?
For PAIL, the program’s courses are all online.
For NC Teach, some courses are offered online. Some have campus components that require you to be present on campus, typically in the evening.
For Licensure-Only programs, online course and campus course availability varies by semester.

When should I take the PRAXIS Core?
If you are a new first year student, you should consider taking the summer before your sophomore year. Transfer students should consider taking the exam the summer before their first semester at UNC Greensboro. Taking the exam early will ensure you have enough time to retake the exam if needed.
How often can I retake the exam?
You can retake the exam 21 business days after your previous attempt. Furthermore, if you don’t meet the required overall passing score on the exam but you passed individual section(s), you would only need to retake the sections you did not pass.

Licensure Exams/Applications
What exams do I need to take in order to be licensed to teach in North Carolina?

What steps do I need to take to apply for NC Licensure?
For those who do not already have NC Licensure, click here. For those who already have NC Licensure, click here
What will happen if I have wait to apply for licensure? For example, what if I waited a year after graduation to apply to be licensed to teach?
Licensure requirements could change during that time period. This could mean that you would need to take additional exams or courses in order to apply for licensure.
Scholarships and other Sources for Funding for Undergraduate Students
When does the SOE General Fund Scholarships Application become available?

When do students learn whether they have received an award?
Students who receive awards will be notified by the middle of July each school year.
Are there other funding opportunities available for students majoring in Education?
The Federal TEACH Grant can provide funding to UNC Greensboro students who plan on becoming teachers and meet very specific requirements. For more information on the TEACH Grant, click here.
Is there a way to forgive my students loans after I graduate?
You might be eligible for the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program, which can forgive up to $17,500 of your student loans. For more information about receiving loan forgiveness, click here.
Placements
Do I need to find my own internship site?
The SOE placement coordinator will find you an internship site.
What documentation do I need to participate in internships?
You will need to complete a criminal background check that is specifically for our internships. You will also need professional liability insurance for internships.

When will I participate in Student Teaching, and do I need to do anything to prepare for it?
You will participate in a Student Teaching experience during your final semester of your senior year. In order to participate in Student Teaching, you will need to complete the Student Teaching Application during your junior year. The application and deadlines for completing it can be found on this webpage.
