  • UNC-Chapel Hill SOE Distinguished Leadership Award
  • UNC Greensboro SOE Advisory Board member (2011-2018); District Leadership Chair (2017-2018)
  • 9th Superintendent of the Wake County Public School System (2013-2018)
  • Helped improve the graduation rate in the district of 160,000 students to historic highs and encouraged county leaders to significantly improve funding for teachers and children

Amos Olagunju headshot
Dr. Amos O. Olagunju
Ed.D. Educational Research and Evaluation 1987

  • First recipient of the UNC Greensboro Doctorate in Educational Research and Evaluation (1987)
  • Professor and the Chair of the Computer Science Department at Delaware State University (DSU) for nine years, establishing a reputable computer science degree program
  • Martin Luther King-Rosa Park-Cesar Chavez visiting scholar at Michigan State University (1990-1991)
  • Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Chief Research Officer at Winston Salem State University, pioneering initiatives doubling funded research activities
  • Interim Dean of Undergraduate Studies for two years at St. Cloud State University (SCSU) in Minnesota, and is currently a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology at SCSU
  • ABET Program Evaluator designation (2012)
  • Carnegie African Diaspora Program Fellow (2015) helping Caleb University in Nigeria improve its computer science program and develop information technology and postgraduate programs
  • Special Fulbright Scholar (2017) helping Bugema University in Uganda improve its research capabilities and graduate programs in Information Technology

Kathelene McCarty Smith
Master of Library and Information Studies 2009

  • Outreach and Instruction Archivist at the University Libraries UNC Greensboro
  • Works with University faculty and community partners in the creation of instructional sessions and programming and oversees the department’s volunteer program, reference services, and its historic photograph collection  
  • Her research interests include: primary source literacy, library volunteerism, and the mobilization of women’s colleges during World War One
  • Library and Information Studies (LIS) Department Advisory Board member (2016-present)
  • Strong advocate for the LIS department and the LIS Alumni Association
  • Helped develop an archives track for the Library and Information Studies program
  • Responsible for recruiting a number of excellent students to the LIS program
  • Jackson Library Staff Service Award Winner, (2016)

  • Worked in North Carolina public schools prior to joining the faculty of the UNC Greensboro School of Education
  • UNC Greensboro SOE Advisory Board member (2012-2018); Board Chair (2015-2018); Campaign Readiness Committee member (2017-2018)
  • Served through the transition of two different Deans in the School of Education and spearheaded the transition of the SOE Advisory Board into a productive working board
  • Holds three degrees from UNC Greensboro and is respected by all who have the privilege to know and work with her
  • Member, Dean’s Search Committee (2016)
