Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), concentration in Secondary Social Studies
The Master of Teaching in Secondary Social Studies program is for students who hold an undergraduate degree in a social studies discipline (anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology) who wish to receive secondary (9-12) teaching licensure. The program prepares students for successful teaching at the high school level.

This program is designed for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in a social studies discipline (anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology) who wish to receive licensure to teach at the secondary (9-12) level.
Career Opportunities
This program prepares students to be successful social studies teachers at the high school level. As part of this preparation, students spend 50 hours in an internship during the fall semester of their final year in the program, and engage in full-time student teaching during the spring semester of their senior year.
Research Interests
Students will engage in an action research project of their own teaching in accordance with Evidence 5 of the North Carolina licensure portfolio.

- TED 669, Educational Implications of Learning and Developmental Theory, or TED 622, Differentiated Instruction, or approved substitute (3hr)
- TED 545 Diverse Learners, or TED 646, Introduction to Equity Education, or approved substitute (3hr)
- ERM 605, Educational Measurement and Evaluation, or ERM 604, Methods of Educational Research, or approved substitute (3hr)
Pedagogical Expertise Courses (21hr)
- TED 553, Teaching Practices and Curriculum in Social Studies (3hr, plus a 50hr internship that turns into the student teaching placement; must be taken the Fall semester before TED680a/TED680b)
- 18 Hours of Content Courses in HIS, PSC, GEO, ECO, ATY, PSY, or SOC at the 500 or 600 level (half of which must be at the 600 level)
Professional Development/Leadership (12hr)
- TED 638, Seminar in Secondary Education, or approved substitute (3hr)
- TED 680a/TED680b, Clinical Experience (student teaching) in Teaching and Seminar (9hr, spring only; must be taken the final semester of the program; no other coursework can be taken with student teaching)
Minimum Program Requirements
- Cumulative GPA of a 3.0;
- All graduate school entry requirements
- Completion of state requirements for licensure, including the state licensure portfolio (it is also strongly recommended that students pass Praxis II before graduation)

The following are prerequisites to the program; however, no one ever satisfies all of these prerequisites. Any course deficiencies in your previous transcripts that exist at time of admission will then be added into your MAT plan of study and must be completed prior to student teaching:
- PSC 100 or equivalent (American Government/Politics)
- PSC 260 or equivalent (Comparative Politics)
- ATY 212 or equivalent (General Anthropology)
- TED 535 or equivalent (Literacy in the Content Area)
- ECO 201 or equivalent (Microeconomics)
- ECO 202 or equivalent (Macroeconomics)
- HIS 211 or equivalent (American History to 1865)
- HIS 212 or equivalent (American History from 1865)
- European History or Western Civilization Course
- Non-Western History Course (e.g., History of Africa or China)
- World/Regional Geography Course
- SOC 101 or equivalent (Introduction to Sociology)
