B.S. in Middle Grades Education

The Middle Grades program at UNC Greensboro prepares future teachers for North Carolina licensure in Middle Grades (grades 6-9) including an essential understanding of Middle Grades’ students and schools; rigorous content-area knowledge; and exemplary teaching practice. Young adolescents are in a stage of great transition, making middle school an exciting and challenging place to be.

Designed For

The Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education is designed for students who seek initial licensure as a teacher in grades 6 through 9 with a subject-area concentration in English, mathematics, science, social studies, or TESOL.

Career Opportunities

All students working on a B.S. in Middle Grades Education will complete three 100-hour internships in local middle schools, along with coursework, prior to student teaching.

UNC Greensboro faculty from the TEHE Department work closely with public school faculty (whom we call On-Site Teacher Educators, or OSTEs) to plan a range of “theory into practice” experiences. There are also opportunities for service in programs and centers serving local middle grades students, as well as workshops designed to strengthen each candidate’s understanding and skill.

Research Interests

Faculty members associated with the Middle Grades program conduct research in a wide range of topics. These include: equity in science education; student culture/identity and learning; professional development in math education; educational psychology; sociocultural lens on learning; student belonging; teaching politics; and online education.

Total hours: 124-128 hours including at least 36 hours at/above 300 course level
