Master of Education in Special Education

This program is designed to provide advanced teacher licensure in Special Education: General Curriculum to individuals who have an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited university in special education or another education related field. The primary goal of the MEd program is to prepare teacher leaders for diverse roles in working with individuals with disabilities across the lifespan in a variety of inclusive educational and community environments.

This program will benefit teachers seeking competence in instructional and positive behavioral strategies for students with learning/behavioral needs.

Students have the opportunity to work closely with professors in an environment that fosters growth and emphasizes the delivery of services in integrated settings, with a focus on interdisciplinary and interagency collaboration. Upon graduation, students are prepared for professional careers in rural and urban, public and private schools, residential settings, community agencies, clinics, and organizations.

We value diverse and evidence-based pedagogical, instructional, curricular, and positive behavioral approaches as well as research methodologies designed to produce appropriate learning outcomes for all students.

Program of Study

The M.Ed. in Special Education: General Curriculum requires 33 semester hours for students licensed in special education and 39 semester hours for student licensed in another area of education but not special education Both options lead to eligibility for advanced licensure in General Curriculum. At least 27 hours in the program of study must be in 600-level courses.

Minimum Program Requirements

In addition to the application materials required by The Graduate School, applicants must submit a re­sume, three letters of recommendation, official transcripts, most current GRE scores (within 5 years) and Personal Statement of Purpose (goals, past experience and unique skills). Applicants must submit all application materials required by The Graduate School by the appropriate deadline.

Additional Information

If admitted to the program, an advisor will be assigned to assist in developing a Plan of Study. Candidates will need to submit an electronic M.Ed. portfolio which is assembled from projects completed during coursework.   The capstone product includes artifacts, reflective essays, and an oral presentation.
