M.S. in Counseling, concentration in Couple and Family Counseling

This program builds upon the plan of study for Clinical Mental Health Counseling with specialized studies, practicum and internship in Couple and Family Counseling. Through the master’s degree in Couple and Family Counseling, students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to work with individuals, couples, and families through a systems approach in a variety of counseling settings.

Example Careers

  • Working in counseling agencies with diverse client populations
  • Providing in-home counseling for children and families
  • Working with children and youth involved in the foster care system
  • Serving clients impacted by domestic violence and other forms of family violence
  • Providing inpatient and outpatient counseling services.

Experiential Learning

Students in the Couple and Family Counseling track have many opportunities to develop couple and family counseling skills. Beginning in their first semester, students complete a practicum in which they observe the duties and responsibilities of a practitioner in this specialty area.  Specific skills training occurs in core courses, in an advanced practicum in the Nicholas A. Vacc Counseling and Consulting Clinic, and in a 600-hour internship in a local agency, hospital, private practice, or other organization whose mission is to serve families.
